Danae - GRP Whaler

The GRP whaler “Danae” or 7622 was in the last batch of Fibre Glass (GRP) whalers to be built for the Royal Navy.

The first motor whalers were built in 1955 and were of double skin mahogany construction.  In the following year Halmatic produced the first GRP whaler propelled by an 11 BHP Enfield air cooled diesel engine that gave a speed of 6.5 knots.

They became known as the “three in one” whalers due to their being fitted for rowing, sailing, and motor power.  As they progressed in service many modifications were made.  7622 is fitted for power only, having an 18 HP ST2 Lister engine and two oars for emergencies.
